Control Water, Lava, & More in This Upcoming Action RPG
Fading Echo features a playable demo on Steam.
Check out Fading Echo, an upcoming action-adventure RPG developed by Emeteria, in which you can control the water element and use its power in fast-paced combat. The game is planned for release in Q3 and now features a playable demo.
You can catch a glimpse of the elemental adventure and try the first hour of Fading Echo. There, you can explore a mysterious Cindervault Source, a place where water, lava, and toxic waste fuel combat, exploration, and puzzles. Players can use the environment against enemies, and combine fluid powers with hand-to-hand attacks for elemental combos and finishers. The demo also introduces two key characters, or, to be more specific, voices – Rahne and Vellum.

In Fading Echo, players take on the role of One, a young legend with the ability to transform into a living sphere of water and use fluid powers to navigate the environment and battle enemies. Water can be mixed with lava, toxic waste, and Paradox corruption to trigger chain reactions. Apart from the element control, Fading Echo also features shifting realities with changing hazards and combat rules.

Environment Artist Lucas Duguin revealed some details about creating the game's world. According to the creator, to save production time, the team skipped traditional blockouts and worked directly with simple primitive-based shapes, starting from nine unique base assets and expanding to around thirty variations.
"Fading Echo's goal was to create an ambitious semi-open world with four distinct biomes, each sharing two alternate realities. The project was built with a relatively small team, so we had to find ways to optimize production time without jeopardizing quality."
One of the key mechanics of the game is portals, Duguin continued:
"One of the core mechanics in the game is the portal travel which allows the player to seamlessly transition between multiple realities. Fading Echo's Lead Level Designer, Tristan Truchot, initially built the portal system as a flat doorway that let players see directly into the reality they were about to travel to. That idea was later scrapped in favor of the bubble system we have now."
Thibaud Juge, Tech Artist, explained that the game's fluid interaction systems power water, lava, Aether, and corruption effects. The Aether visualization was initially prototyped using FluidNinja but rebuilt from scratch after performance fell short of production targets.
An interesting detail is that the protagonist's hair uses a custom simulation called Bigoudi. It was later migrated to Unreal Engine's Niagara framework to resolve GPU compatibility issues and improve iteration speed.
