Counter-Strike 2's New Update Adds Italy & Updates Hostage Models

Additionally, the release changes the game's volumetric smoke.

Valve has recently shipped one more small update for Counter-Strike 2, a soon-to-be-released Source 2-powered edition of the iconic first-person shooter, first announced back in March. With this update, the studio introduced a couple of new features and improvements, a new map, and several quality-of-life enhancements.

Regarding the game's maps, the release adds Italy, one of the most iconic maps from the previous games, to Deathmatch and Casual game modes. It also removes Anubis and Ancient, added to Counter-Strike 2 with the previous update earlier this month, and temporarily disables Competitive and Private Matchmaking in the Limited Test. YouTube user Karma has shared an exclusive first look at the newly-added map:

Besides the new map, the patch notes have also revealed that Counter-Strike 2's hostage models have been enhanced, and the shape of the game's volumetric smoke has been slightly adjusted.

For those unaware, CS2's smokes were overhauled from CS:GO and are now dynamic volumetric objects capable of interacting with the environment and reacting to lighting, gunfire, and explosions. With this update, the area covered by smoke has been slightly reduced in width yet increased in height.

The update also features:

  • Unified StatTrak position on both CS2 M4 models to not occlude stickers.
  • Adjusted sticker sizes on CS2 M4A4 so they no longer overlap.
  • Audio mix tweaks and adjustments.
  • Added support for multiple team introduction variants.

It's also worth mentioning that if the earlier rumors turn out to be accurate, there's a high likelihood that the update in question will be the final one before the game is officially released

For those who are not aware, players noticed an intriguing detail on the Overpass map earlier, which was added to the game back in July. All the clocks in the map were consistently set to display the time 8:24. This led to speculation that Valve might be hinting at a Counter-Strike 2 release on August 24th, which isn't at all implausible, considering that the game is still scheduled to be released sometime in Summer and there's less than a month worth of Summer remaining. Whether this theory is a stretch or holds some truth will likely be clarified next week.
