Cult of the Lamb Was Not Blocked from Xbox Game Pass by Sony
Devolver Digital denied the rumors that Sony paid to stop Cult of the Lamb going on Game Pass.
Earlier this month, Microsoft alleged that Sony is paying "blocking rights" to developers in order to prevent their games from being added to Xbox Game Pass. However, the company didn't specify which titles it refers to.
And last week, screenwriter and former editor-in-chief of PC Gamer Gary Whitta claimed that Sony paid Massive Monster, the developer behind the recently released Cult of the Lamb, to keep the game from appearing on Game Pass.
Whitta shared this information during the recent Kinda Funny Games podcast, although he neither went into detail on the agreement nor revealed his source. He, however, noted that this might be just a part of the reason why the indie game was not added to Xbox's subscription service.
"Somebody told me that part of the reason why [Cult of the Lamb is] not on Game Pass is Sony paid [the developer] not to put it on Game Pass," Whitta said. "It will then incentivize you to not do any additional subscriber deals with competing platforms."
Following Whitta's statement publisher Devolver Digital which was responsible for the game denied this information. Responding to The Gamer's report regarding the matter, the publisher said that "this is absolutely untrue."
Cult of the Lamb was released on August 11 and has already become a massive hit – the game has managed to sell 1 million copies within only the first week since its launch. The indie title also saw an impressive concurrent peak of 61,780 players following its release.
Taking this into account, Cult of the Lamb seems to be pretty successful even without being added to Xbox's subscription service. However, this doesn't mean that it won't appear on Xbox Game Pass's catalog sometime in the future, especially, considering that there was no real deal with Sony.
