Custom Unity Render Pipeline Transforms 3D Scenes into Pixel Art

An interesting project by Red Giraffe.

Pixel art has its own niche of appreciators, and developments in this area are always welcome. So many will be glad to see this custom Unity render pipeline transforming 3D scenes into pixel art, created by an artist known as Red Giraffe.

The method is "a combination of downsampling internal textures into low-resolution buffers and quantizing them before compositing and upsampling back to source resolution."

The colorful shadows are a custom render pass that quantizes the image, in the creator's words, so you "can look at shadows as reducing the value of the pixel it casts up and then the custom pass tries to match that to next appropriate color available."
