Darkest Dungeon II will Leave Early Access in February 2023

The developers are focusing on changing the progression, relationships, and content.

Red Hook announced the release date of Darkest Dungeon II: the game is expected to leave Early Access in February 2023, with console releases following. Meanwhile, we can expect "more frequent, smaller-scoped milestone releases," with the studio focusing on several crucial areas.

First of all, Red Hook decided that the current XP/unlock system is "quite minimal" and doesn't have enough meaningful choices. The progression system will be overhauled, with the new system providing a stronger and more compelling link between expeditions, focusing on an interesting hub you can use to increase your capabilities and unlock new items.

"We have heard the community’s desire for something more evocative of Hamlet-style upgrades and decisions, and this dovetails with our own internal vision," said the company.

Another area that needs improvement, according to Red Hook, is the relationship system introduced in the sequel.

"Knowing a relationship is headed in a positive or negative direction robs the reveal of its impact, and the amount of passive banter and frequent interruptions stemming from relationships can clog up the combat experience."

The studio is planning to "bring back some tension and surprise," add more meaningful choices, make the benefits (and drawbacks) of relationships more active and "less of a spectator sport", and remove some of the combat clutter and interruptions.

The stagecoach sequences will also see some changes, with Red Hook admitting that "the tension of stumbling on a trap, or the possibility of a blockage, ambush, etc., is missing from the current roadways." Expect to see new decision-making layers which open up new avenues to "enhance the preparatory aspects of journeying."

As for the world itself, the company decided to improve the current maps and create new routes instead of making something totally new. Darkest Dungeon II will have more minibosses, including the Cultist Exemplar, the Collector from the first game, and a third, secret threat.

Something else to look forward to is the reinforced Cultist faction, the improved Trinkets, and behind-the-scenes development insights.
