Dead Island 2 Current Dev Never Considered Remaking the Original Reveal Trailer

Dead Island 2 director explained that the team created the game from scratch and didn't want to redo the trailer as it differs from the final version of the game.

The developers behind the upcoming Dead Island 2 shared that they never considered remaking the game's reveal trailer which has managed to become iconic over the years.

For those unaware, Dead Island 2 was first revealed during E3 in 2014 – back then Yager Development, the German studio known for Spec Ops: The Line, was in charge of the game. At the time the team introduced the game with a CG video featuring a song by Pigeon John, The Bomb, that many have considered a "masterpiece of a trailer."

However, Yager was unable to complete the project and the production of Dead Island 2 was transferred to Sumo Digital, the developer of LittleBigPlanet 3. However, this studio was also removed from the project and replaced by Dambuster, the studio which previously released the shooter Homefront: The Revolution.

Dambuster revealed its new Dead Island 2 in August 2022 with a new cinematic trailer showing one of the six game's playable characters fighting his way through hordes of zombies just to get to a shop. Although the trailer turned out to be pretty impressive, it totally differs from the original video revealed in 2014.

Speaking to Game Informer, current Dead Island 2 game director David Stenton shared that the team never even think about remaking the original trailer, as Dambuster's version of Dead Island 2 differs from what Yager showed eight years ago in tone and atmosphere.

"It wasn't really on our radar to redo the trailer," Stenton explained. "That trailer definitely delivered on the postcard LA and I think we deliver on postcard LA in a different way."

He also added that Dambuster Studios started the work on the game from scratch (which he already mentioned in an interview he gave in August) and did not take inspiration from previous commercials and other promotional materials. Right now, Stenton stresses, the most important thing for the studio is to release a great game that fans will appreciate.

Dead Island 2 is scheduled to release on April 28, 2023. The game will be available for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
