The Ministry of Culture and Education in Finland has updated the list of elements on the National Inventory of Living Heritage. The National Inventory adheres to The UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage which was ratified by Finland in 2013.  In 2020, the ministry added 12 new elements, and demoscene is one of them.

Demoscene is an international subculture that creates demos. The aim of demos is to show off programming skills in various areas of its use, visual arts, sound, CG-graphics. Demoscene originally comes from continental Europe, especially, Germany, Norway, and Finland.

For instance, Remedy Entertainment was founded by former demosceners, most of its employees are from demoscene, too. Among other game dev companies coming from this subculture are Guerrilla Games, EA's DICE, and more.
