Destiny 2 Players Face Sudden Name Changes After Update

Bungie seeks to fix the issue.

After a recent update, players of Destiny 2, developed by Bungie, saw an unexpected change in their names inside the game.

The name can be forcibly changed if it doesn't correspond with the company's name policies. "Any Bungie Name that violates these policies or our Code of Conduct will be changed to "Guardian[Random Number]" and players may face an in-game ban," reads the regulation. However, it seems that it's not the case, as reportedly thousands of players were affected. "Had the same name since 2015 and in one update lost it," reads one of the comments. "I got my name deleted/changed yesterday...I've had it as my user name on PSN and XBox (and Bungie) since Day 1 of Destiny 1 in 2014..." writes another player.

Players have been wondering if they will be able to take their names back and if they are stuck with the "Guardian" name. "But will I be able to change my name EXACTLY back to what it was," reads one of the tweets. "Am I going to have to redo my Bungie name, or will my name be reinstated?" asks another player.

Some of the players, whose names remained intact, faced issues with their ID numbers. "Team is also looking into this. Right now it's looking like more of a visual bug. Hope to have more info soon on this as well. Stay tuned," reads the development team's tweet.

Bungie commented on the situation, stating that the company is aware of the issue and is continuing to find solutions. Unfortunately, the developer didn't manage to solve the issue yet, and the specific target date is not defined. Bungie expects to have more information in the near future, including distributing name change tokens.
