Developer Showed Impressive Flock Simulation in WIP Medieval Strategy

Check out the updates on Highland Keep.

Kacper Szwajka, the developer of an upcoming medieval-inspired strategy Highland Keep showcased this impressive setup with a real-time sim of 5,000 individual birds.

According to the developer, the technique behind this visualization involves pulling each group toward an 'attract' point that functions similarly to an orbit. The pipeline also includes a flocking pass, velocity noise, and terrain collision. As the creator noted, the noise effect in the setup is quite intense, making the flocking behavior less noticeable, but it can be adjusted.

Highland Keep, set in Medieval Scotland, combines survival, strategy, and role-playing, in which you take on the role of a clan chieftain who must defend a stronghold. The developer has been sharing updates on the game, offering behind-the-scenes looks at the technical and creative process. For example, the creator showcased real-time voxelized lighting, a custom solution that allows interaction with millions of scattered objects across the terrain, a WIP castle-building mode, a creative main menu, and a tool for building terrain:
