Dire Wolf Digital To Acquire Fandom's Tabletop Business Cortex

Fandom is selling its tabletop roleplaying game system as it is looking to exit the RPG business.

Strategy card game developer Dire Wolf Digital is acquiring Cortex, a tabletop roleplaying games business owned by Fandom. The exact purchase price has not been disclosed.

Cortex is a multi-genre, modular, session-centered tabletop roleplaying game system made by creators of D&D Beyond and designer Cam Banks. It gives players tools to build their own worlds, characters, and stories using a standardized set of modular rules and mechanics, similar to the ones in Dungeons & Dragons.

Fandom said that, as part of the deal, Dire Wolf will also manage Tales of Xadia: The Dragon Prince Roleplaying Game based on the Netflix series The Dragon Prince and created in partnership with Wonderstorm. The company also noted that the expansion to the game dubbed Tales of Xadia: The Sunfire Chronicle is currently in development.

"As we looked to exit the RPG business with our recent sale of D&D Beyond to Hasbro, we were laser focused on finding Cortex the right home with a company who would nurture and grow the business with a fan-first mindset. I’m confident we found that with Dire Wolf Digital," said Fandom's Chief Business Officer Michael Chiang.

"We're incredibly excited by the prospect of pairing what Cortex and Tales of Xadia have begun with our expertise in creating digital experiences," President of Dire Wolf Digital Scott Martins added. "We are huge fans of The Dragon Prince, and we’re looking forward to Season 4 along with everyone else. We’re especially excited about working with Wonderstorm on even more great experiences for fans of Tales of Xadia going forward."
