Disney Offers a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Its 1940 Film, Fantasia

The studio revealed the original pencil test footage from The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

While Disney Animation Studios is known for many things, one aspect it is not commonly associated with is transparency, making each instance of the studio inviting viewers backstage a truly remarkable occasion. Recently, much to the surprise and delight of many, the team did just that by offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the studio's 1940 animated musical anthology film, Fantasia, or, to be more specific, the movie's The Sorcerer's Apprentice segment.

Over on LinkedIn, the team unveiled some exclusive pencil test footage of original animation drawings created for the segment, sourced directly from Disney's Animation Research Library, the company's vast collection of resources aimed at preserving the studio's artistic heritage, usually accessible to only a select few.

As noted in Disney's post, the sequence was set up by Les Clark, a renowned Animator and one of the studio's first creators, known as Disney's Nine Old Men, and Ugo D'Orsi, an Animator best known for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, while Actor and Visual Effects Artist Dan MacManus handled the animation of visual effects.
