Launched earlier this year by Studio AAA's Jack McArdle and Danny Void, Dither Boy is the ultimate all-in-one tool for image and video dithering. It provides unrestricted access to controllable creative error diffusion, bitmap, halftone, and modulation effects, perfect for experimenting and enhancing your creative projects.
The latest release features a complete overhaul of all 52 effects to support color palettes and color depth. This allows you to dither an image based on the luminosity of its pixels, then apply a color palette and dither that palette, either to match the image for an authentic retro look or to intentionally mismatch the color depth with the luminosity scale, producing color glitches within the dithering algorithm.
As Jack shared with us, each palette can have up to 32 depth iterations, even if it contains fewer than 32 colors. This opens up many possibilities for creating an authentic retro look that follows a real dithering algorithm, and the developers' goal is for the resulting images to genuinely resemble those from classic retro games, but at resolutions suitable for today's standards.
Between the original greyscale version we covered and Dither Boy 4.0, several features have been added, including video support, a presets system, and black shape vector export for users interested in using Dither Boy for embroidery or garment production.
All those features have been added at no additional cost to existing users, and the tool remains a one-time purchase. Now that the update is live, Jack is also releasing new color palettes every month for users to download for free, along with tutorials showcasing specific effects you can achieve with Dither Boy.
