The latest installment in the Dragon Age franchise gets off to a good start.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard has gotten off to a good start. On its very first day, it has became publisher EA's biggest singer-player game on Steam, with 70,414 concurrent players on the platform, beating the record set by Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, whose all-time peak was 67,855.
At the time of writing this article, BioWare's new RPG ranked 9th on the most-played games chart with 59,356 current players. This is a narrow win over GTA 5, which has 57,875 players at the moment.
The first batch of players has given the game a positive review score, with 77% recommending it for its fluid and intensive combat, stunning visuals like beautiful environments, and amazing hair physics. However, some critics feel the game misses the core elements of previous Dragon Age titles, mentioning issues in character design, story, and dialogue that fail to relate to the franchise. Other than that, there have been reports of the game constantly crashing during shader compilation and it won't work properly on the Steam Deck despite it claiming to be verified.
The Veilguard's successful beginning was no surprise for EA, as during the Q2 earnings call held earlier this week, CEO Andrew Wilson said he "certainly think(s) Veilguard has breakout potential." The IP's strong performance — its last title, Dragon Age: Inquisition, was Game of the Year — combined with the "limited competition" thanks to "some of the moves that have happened across the broader industry" are what contribute to his confidence.
