Dying Light Director on Why Shorter Games Can Be More Satisfying

Tymon Smektala says that finishing big games sometimes feels "like a chore."

Tymon Smektala, franchise director of Dying Light, believes that shorter games can bring a more satisfying experience.

In a recent talk with GamesRadar+, he pointed to Assassin's Creed Shadows as an example: "If I start playing Assassin's Creed Shadows, basically from the start I know that I will never finish it. I get my money's worth out of the investment, but it's not by completing the game."

He explains that with such expansive titles, most players never get to see everything the game has to offer, and satisfaction comes instead from "the gameplay mechanics, with the chunk of the story I managed to experience, learn, understand." Smektala says: "finishing it basically at some point starts feeling like a chore. I don't want to pay additionally for a chore, right?"

The upcoming Dying Light: The Beast will feature a story of about 20 hours to complete, joining titles like Alan Wake 2 and Control, which can be completed in approximately 15 hours. Thus, the director is "quite confident that Dying Light: The Beast delivers on every pound, every dollar, every euro, every yuan that you have spent on the game."

Before, Tymon Smektala joined 80 Level and offered a behind-the-scenes look at the story and development of the first two games, and provided some details about Dying Light: The Beast.
