EA Head Admitted that Battlefield V and 2042 Didn't Meet Fans' Expectations

Nonetheless, he believes that the franchise can be reinvented and continue to thrive in the hands of the right creative team.

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson recently admitted that Battlefield V and Battlefield 2042 did not live up to players' expectations. However, he noted that the franchise can be reinvented and developed in a new way.

The head of EA spoke of the Battlefield franchise during the recent Goldman Sachs conference that took place last week. During his speech, Wilson noted that with the last two installments in the series, the company did not achieve the success that it had initially hoped for.

"I don’t think we delivered in the last two iterations of that in the way that we should have," Wilson said (via Axios' Stephen Totilo). "There's a lot of work we've got to do there. But at its very core, it's extraordinary IP. And what we've seen in the world of entertainment is [that] great IP is resilient."

Wilson noted that he is confident that Battlefield is a very sustainable franchise that can continue to thrive in the hands of the right creative team. He compared it to the Star Wars series which, according to him, had moments when it didn't meet fans' expectations but managed to be reinvented and deliver a better experience.

The head of EA believes that currently, Battlefield is developed by reliable developers who know the right direction where the franchise should go in the future. He shared that EA wants to almost completely cover the genre of first-person shooters, especially considering the uncertainty around Call of Duty which might become an Xbox exclusive following Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

The Battlefield series, according to Wilson, is "platform-agnostic and completely cross-platform", so he considers the current situation a perfect opportunity for EA to focus on developing the franchise.

Earlier, Vince Zampella, who was put in charge of the Battlefield series last year, expressed his opinion on Battlefield 2042 and the reasons for its disappointing release. He noted that the developers "strayed a little too far from what Battlefield is" but shared that he believes that changes to the development structure will help the game series.
