Sergiy Galyonkin joined Epic Games in 2016 as the Head of Publishing for the Eastern European region. He was subsequently promoted to the position of Director of Publishing Strategy the following year. Before joining Epic Games, Galyonkin created Steam Spy, a service that utilizes data from Steam user profiles to analyze and generate statistics, including precise sales figures for games and average playtime. This experience played a crucial role in shaping and informing the development of the Epic Games Store, which was launched in 2018.
Speaking of Galyonkin's departure, it took place shortly after Epic confirmed significant layoffs, which affected 870 employees and accounted for approximately 16% of the company's total workforce. As of now, it remains unclear whether Galyonkin's departure was pre-planned or if it is directly related to the recent events.
"Today is officially my last day at Epic Games. These eight years have been some of the most exciting in my career, and I am deeply grateful to my former Epic Games colleagues and Tim Sweeney for allowing me to help build Epic 4.0," Galyonkin wrote on Twitter.
Reflecting on his time at Epic Games, Galyonkin emphasized the continuous triumph of Fortnite, which "became one of those self-reinforcing cultural phenomenal", including its impactful fundraising efforts for Ukraine in 2022. He also highlighted the achievements of the Epic Games Store, stating that they demonstrated that free-to-play without pay-to-win could thrive on a large scale.
"We proved that free-to-play without pay-to-win can work at scale. We challenged the status quo in game distribution with the 88/12 revenue share," Galyonkin stated.

Galyonkin also added that Epic Games is at the stage of developing and transforming from the game creator, publisher, and engine developer into an Epic 5.0 platform, and here's what he thinks about it: "I am not a good fit for this new version of Epic; it requires people of a different kind."
The good news is that Galyonkin is staying in the gaming industry and we'll have a chance to see the creative endeavors and contributions that Galyonkin will bring forth in the future.
