The Unreal Engine team presented a new toolkit for the creation of real-time digital humans.
Today, Epic Games revealed MetaHuman Creator, a cloud-streamed app that is said to decrease the time costs of creating real-time digital humans "from weeks or months to less than an hour." The new system is based on an ever-growing library of variants of human appearance and motion, letting users generate convincing new characters by using an intuitive interface. Users are allowed to pick a starting point by selecting a number of preset faces and then tweak a preset for the desired result.
"You can select from around 30 hairstyles that use Unreal Engine’s strand-based hair, or hair cards for lower-end platforms. There’s also a set of example clothing to choose from, as well as 18 differently proportioned body types," wrote the team. "When you’re happy with your human, you can download the asset via Quixel Bridge, fully rigged and ready for animation and motion capture in Unreal Engine, and complete with LODs."
Users will also get access to the source data in the form of a Maya file (meshes, skeleton, facial rig, animation controls, and materials). You can then animate the character using performance capture tools. For example, you can use Unreal Engine’s Live Link Face iOS app, and they teamed up with other teams to bring more possibilities in the future.
MetaHuman Creator is said to be ready for a test-drive as part of an Early Access program within the next few months. Learn more here.
