Epic Games Veteran Claims He's Building AI-Heavy "Fully European" Game Engine
Arjan Brussee said that Immense is made by Europeans, hosted in Europe, and complies with EU regulations.
Arjan Brussee, who co-founded Guerrilla Games and later worked at Epic Games for eight years as Technical Director, is now a freelance developer and recently appeared on De Technoloog podcast to talk about The Immense Engine, a new "European" game engine.
"No one is currently making an engine that is fully European-hosted, built by Europeans, and complies with European rules and guidelines. Creating usable 3D worlds is becoming increasingly important, certainly for purposes other than just gaming."
Brussee said that being European-built, The Immense Engine may be applied to 3D simulations across the defence and logistics sectors.
He also stated that the project prioritizes an AI-native architecture. Brussee criticized existing engines such as Unreal Engine, saying they were "made for and by people who have to click through a menu with a mouse. If you want to change something, it has to be done for the entire engine."
"The rise of AI means that we need to approach the development of this kind of crucial software differently. As an old hand with a vision of how things should work, I see opportunities there.
If you are smart and know how to put a good framework of AI agents to work, you can do the work of ten or fifteen people."
