Learn more about what you'll find on Fab, the successor to the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab Store, and the new home for Quixel Megascans.
First introduced at GDC last year, Fab is a new marketplace set to replace Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab, ArtStation Marketplace, and Quixel Megascans. Similar to these platforms, Fab allows digital creators across various industries to discover, publish, and share a wide range of assets. After a long wait and several announcements, this new content marketplace is now officially live.
Unreal Engine developers will be able to access Fab directly in the Unreal Engine 5 Editor, and Fortnite creators can discover Fortnite-ready assets through Fab in UEFN. The Fab integration in UEFN is undergoing maintenance and will be available shortly, and the Fab integration in the Unreal Engine 5 Editor is coming soon.
Fab provides content that is compatible with multiple game engines, a diverse range of asset types, various licensing options, and much more. Here's what you can do on Fab today:
- Browse an extensive content library with top-quality 3D assets, VFX, and environments;
- Use "Channels" to find content compatible with Unreal Engine, UEFN and Unity;
- Choose the license that meets your needs;
- Make informed decisions about what you want to download or purchase with Fab's next-generation real-time 3D viewer;
- Find assets that are right for your audience with age rating restrictions.
When Fab's launch window was announced, it was also revealed that the Quixel Megascans library will no longer be available for free starting next year. Naturally, the community quickly responded to this concerning news with Jamie Phan releasing a script that automatically saves all Quixel assets to your account while they're still free until the end of 2024.
Later on, it was disclosed that an official tool would be provided to allow users to download all the Quixel assets that are currently free on Fab. Epic has addressed this topic in the Fab release blog post, stating that with one click on this new page, you can claim over 17,000 Megascans, including 10 packs with brand-new scene files from Quixel.
According to the FAQ, you can currently download assets individually from the Quixel profile on Fab, with the solution that will let you add all Megascans to your Fab library and manage them more easily coming soon. It's also said that all Megascans are available on Fab and can be claimed for free until the end of the year. Any Megascans you claimed on Fab during this time are yours to keep, even once they transition to a paid model.
Epic has also outlined some future plans for Fab, including the introduction of new file formats such as Roblox and Minecraft assets, access to MetaHumans, a new listing review system, product-specific FAQs, a streamlined pipeline for creators to publish content directly from UEFN to Fab, and new analytics to enhance the seller experience.
Next year, a curated selection from the Megascans library will be offered for free to all users, regardless of the engine or platform they're using. This starter pack will contain more than 1,500 hand-picked assets, including a variety of popular 3D assets, plants, trees, surfaces, decals, and imperfections and the 10 packs Quixel released on Fab's launch day.
