Esports Hotels Are Gaining Popularity in Asia

Such facilities are especially popular among teenagers aged between 15 and 18.

Esports hotels are gaining more and more popularity among young gamers in Asia, Niko Partners reveals. According to the firm's new report, as of mid-2022, there were 11,000 esports hotels in China, and by the end of 2023, this number is expected to exceed 20,000.

If you're not familiar with the concept, esports hotels provide rooms with esports and gaming facilities including gaming PCs, consoles, or smartphones – the devices are available for guests directly in the rooms or in specially designated areas.

There are basically two types of such hotels – specialized esports hotels and regular hotels with esports facilities. According to Niko Partners which cites China Tourist Hotels Association and Tongcheng Travel's 2022 Esports Hotel Market Research Report, 36% of the 11,000 hotels in China are classified as specialized, created from scratch for gamers and esportsmen. The remaining 64% are ordinary hotels that have organized "esports zones" in their spaces.

Niko Partners claims that esports hotels are gaining popularity popular among all age groups in Mainland China, however, they are especially popular among teenagers aged 15-18 years. This fact is quite notable as traditional internet cafes have banned minors for about 20 years, while there is currently no ban on minors in esports hotels.

A survey among hotel guests in China showed that 79.5% of them want to participate in esports competitions, at least at an amateur level. The top three most popular esports hotel games are Honor of Kings, Peacekeeper Elite (Chinese version of PUBG Mobile), and League of Legends.

While Niko Partners' report doesn't provide exact figures on the esports hotel situation in other Asian countries, it claims that this trend is also starting to gain popularity in Southeast Asian countries. This market is also starting to emerge in the Middle East.
