Ex-BioWare Producer Suggests EA Might Sell Its IPs to Pay Off Debt

Mark Darrah shared his thoughts on the new owners' potential actions following the deal.

Mark Darrah, a former BioWare Executive Producer, suggested that Electronic Arts might sell some of its "dormant IPs" or some of its studios after the company's $55 billion buyout to pay off the $20 billion that EA will adopt through the process of the deal.

Recently, it was revealed that EA will be acquired by a group of companies, including the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, for $55 billion. Following the news, it has also been reported that EA will assume $20 billion in debt as part of the deal's financing.

The BioWare producer suggested that Electronic Arts might sell some of its titles that are not being actively developed:

"EA has a huge repository of dormant IPs that are just sitting there dormant. It seems unlikely that the new resulting structure is going to be eager to suddenly revive a bunch of those IPs. So, one option might be to sell the whole lot of them for $100 million if you could get it because $100 million can come off the debt."

Darrah also said that the new owners might consider shutting down or selling some of their existing studios. The creator shared his opinion on which studios might be affected by that decision, noting that it would make "a ton of sense" for the new group to keep EA Sports and have it "while and strong," while EA Entertainment, focused on more traditional non-sports-related games, "may make a lot less sense."
