Ex-GTA Dev Says GTA 6 Leaks Weren't That Important

Obbe Vermeij says that it's in the best interest of AAA developers "to be quiet".

In September 2022, a major leak of GTA 6 files occurred, when a folder with 90 videos of early development game footage was published illegally by a third party. Rockstar later confirmed the leak to have indeed taken place and expressed disappointment to have the details concerning the game shared in this way. Also due to a leak, the company had to release GTA 6's first teaser trailer half a day earlier than planned, making it seem like the next installment of the Grand Theft Auto series has a "leak" curse placed upon it.

However, according to Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar developer who's been making waves over the past year with his insightful blog posts discussing the development of earlier GTA titles, these leaks weren't that significant.

In his recent interview with SanInPlay, Obbe said that he wasn't following the aforementioned 2022 leak too closely, mostly because, in his opinion, leaks don't usually matter as much as it seems. In addition, the developer shared his take on why leaks happen in the first place, saying that "it's just because there's millions of people waiting for any news. And Rockstar doesn't give them any news."

The former Rockstar developer further explained that big companies such as Rockstar tend not to share much news because everything they say gets analyzed by many and is often spun negatively, thus, according to Obbe, a company's best strategy is to stay quiet. And it seems that AAA developers share this sentiment, with, for example, Bethesda offering little to no information about its upcoming The Elder Scrolls 6 game, forcing fans to piece together whatever bits of information they can scavenge online.

In the same interview, Obbe also expressed his expectations of GTA 6, saying it may not differ significantly from GTA 5. He explained that technology improves slower and there might not be a leap in graphics and hardware.

"I don't think it is going to be wildly different from GTA 5. I think maybe people might be a little disappointed on the first day," said Obbe. However, he remains sure that GTA 6 will be "the best game ever" and Rockstar managed to take it to the next level without a huge technical upgrade.
