Ex-Rockstar Dev: It's Early to Say If GTA 6 Will Meet 2025 Goal

"The decision to delay [GTA IV] was made 4 months or so before the original release date."

Rockstar

The most anticipated game, GTA 6, is expected to be released in late 2025, but recently, rumors of its delay have appeared online. Although several Rockstar employees have reportedly said they hadn't been informed of that, fans are still worried. And maybe they do have a reason.

Game development is not something you can easily predict, especially in the early stages. Former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij, who has worked on GTA 3, 4, San Andreas, and Vice City, believes the studio can't know for sure if it will hit its target release window yet.

"The decision to delay [GTA IV] was made 4 months or so before the original release date. Any further and it's hard to make the call. R* is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish," he said.

He also added that GTA 6 will sell for over a decade with no competition, so Rockstar will only release the game when the team is "100% happy with it."

As it often happens in the industry, Rockstar's parent company Take-Two could push for an earlier release, but Vermeij doesn't think it would do so: "T2 let R* make their own decisions and I don't think there is any reason to change that now."

Vermeij is a great source of GTA behind-the-scenes, so if you want to know more about the series' development, check out his X/Twitter. There, you'll learn how mirrors were made in San Andreas, why planes suddenly crash, why he removed litter in SA, and how the studio had to slow players down in GTA 3.

As for GTA 6, Vermeij has previously said some fans might be disappointed in it because of their high expectations.
