EXCLUSIVE: Video Footage Showcasing Canceled Escape From New York Game Appears Online

Over an hour's worth of footage – including 15 minutes of WIP gameplay – demonstrating a game that could've been.

In case you missed it, back in March 2024, 80 Level shared an exclusive report on a video game adaptation of John Carpenter's 1981 action classic Escape from New York, which had been in development at Embracer Group's Slipgate Ironworks and was canceled in January 2024 due to "significant issues regarding the development process" and the mass layoffs that were hitting Embracer at the time, according to a confirmed ex-Slipgate employee.

Although our source provided extensive comments on the game itself, confirming its existence and explaining why it was shut down, there were very few visuals showing how it was meant to look – just a few concept pieces by Ehsan Yazdani and an ArtStation post by the canceled game's Art Director Eric Arroyo, which has since been deleted but remains accessible via this link.

Recently, our source returned with an update: over an hour of footage from the canceled game has surfaced online, spread across 18 videos. According to the former worker, the videos showcase one of the game's builds and provide a look at Escape from New York: The Game's development maps, assets, character and weapon animations, playable characters and their skills, and some of the WIP mechanics.

One of the videos also includes over 15 minutes of gameplay, providing a glimpse of what the game might have been if it hadn't been canceled – a co-op and/or multiplayer title powered by Unreal Engine 5, featuring at least three playable characters with unique abilities that players would need to use to navigate various levels.

80 Level has reached out to Embracer Group and Slipgate Ironworks for comment on the game's cancellation and why both have yet to acknowledge its existence. In the meantime, you can check out the videos yourself by clicking this link.
