Explore This Beautiful Procedurally Generated Planet In Unity

Game Developer Ragnil has been working on this project for some time, accidentally blowing up the planet along the way. According to Ragnil, there are no defined goals for turning it into a full game, it's mostly a fun side project, though it's exciting to imagine it evolving into something similar to Black & White or even Civilization.

Next, Ragnil is considering adding actor pathfinding across the environment. The world operates on a grid-based system, but it can be easily switched to a vertex-based presentation. Here's a peek at what the planet looked like in its early stages:

For those interested in the development process, here are the steps Ragnil has shared:

  • Generate Voronoi diagram using this repo
  • Use it as input data to create a mesh grid using the Sylves grid library
  • 3D noise lookup to determine height/color
  • Generate the final mesh with vert colors
  • Place some stuff on the surface
  • Let loose a bunch of boids and convince them not to become astronauts
  • Sprinkle some magic dust
