Factorio Is Approaching Its Last Major Gameplay Update
After 2.1, the developers will shift the focus to long-term support.

A decade after its early access release, Factorio is enjoying its last gameplay updates. The 2.1 version will be its last major content upgrade, as the developer, Wube Software, announced in its preview. After it's out by the end of June, the team will shift the focus to long-term support for "things like bug fixes, platform support/compatibility, modding features."
Wube Software is moving to its other projects, which are now being kept secret and will stay this way "for a long time". However, some time ago, developer Kovarex said they were "playing with different kinds of ideas for the next game." To get inspiration, he played Fresh World of Warcraft, and it might move with him to the next experience: "The game I'm thinking about is related to WoW in a similar way as to how Factorio is related to Minecraft."
New members have joined to help with this mysterious project, and some will leave soon, but I'm sure whatever the studio is cooking will impress its audience once again.
"We feel we've reached a good place to conclude the active gameplay development."
Meanwhile, Update 2 will bring quality-of-life changes, fixes, and modding improvements. Sorry, no new planets, enemies, or research trees before the grand takeoff.
Factorio is one of those games that become their own genre, like Dark Souls and Minecraft. Hopefully, its creators will make something equally as great in the future.
