Fan Analysis Shows That Destiny 2 Perk Conspiracy Is Not So Crazy After All

Bungie is investigating.

If you think you keep getting the same weapon perks in Destiny 2, you're not alone. In fact, there is a whole conspiracy going on with players speculating that some perks are weighted to drop more than others.

This has been going on for a while, but some dedicated fans decided to get to the bottom of it and prove to Bungie, which denies such accusations, that there must be an issue in its code. The crazy thing is they might be on to something.

As reported by Forbes, players complain that getting the combo of Envious Arsenal and Bait and Switch for the VS Chill Inhibitor was nearly impossible to get. And this seems to be true, according to research done by X/Twitter user Newo, who found that across 452 drops of the VS Chill Inhibitor, some perk combinations appeared over 20 times, while some never dropped at all.

"I ran a chi-square test on the data, and the results revealed statistically significant discrepancies in perk combinations. The odds of these patterns occurred by random chance is exceedingly low, rejecting the hypothesis that the perks follow a uniform distribution," Newo said.

This looks like something Bungie should take a look at as soon as possible. You can read the whole 10-page document here to see how Newo conducted this study.

However, that's not all there is. Streamer Vendetta introduced another theory: perks are assigned based on their proximity in the API.

Vendetta took VS Chill Inhibitor's 8 most popular perk combinations and saw that "3 out of the 8 combinations are direct pairings with the perk across from them in the API, and the other 5 are all 1 away."

When he analyzed the information about the most dropped perks from the Destiny 2 database Light.gg, he realized that "all the perks that are the furthest away are the least acquired. And, the main combo everyone's complaining about not getting (Envious Arsenal/Bait and Switch) is one of those."

Of course, players want answers from Bungie, and the studio reacted, saying that "there is no intentional perk weighting on weapons within our content setup." However, Vendetta's theory suggests the team should look into combinations, not individual perks.

In any case, Bungie is "investigating a potential issue within our code for how RNG perks are generated," so you might soon get that fabled combination for your weapon.
