Fans Spot Character Animations Similarities in Hollow Knight: Silksong & Castlevania

The "metroidVANIA" tag is well and truly deserved.

The hype surrounding the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong shows no signs of stopping, and naturally, fans of the game are now hard at work dissecting its every inch. Among the most interesting observations made over the last couple of days was the one made by Illustrator Wallace Pires, who illustrated that Silksong truly deserves its "metroidvania" tag by drawing inspiration from one of the titles that have formed this label in the first place.

As shown in Wallace's side-by-side comparison demo, Hornet's moveset in Silksong is strikingly similar to that of Alucard's from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, with jumps, dashes, and attacks being nearly identical. "I was going to praise Silksong for having animations similar to Alucard's, but seeing them side by side, it's the same character controller lol (I love that, by the way)," commented the author.

While Wallace's post clearly indicated that he himself saw the similarities as a positive thing, a number of people started trying to prove that the similarities are a positive thing over in the comments, agreeing with the post, yet for some reason trying to make it seem like Wallace was critical of the homage.

That apparent lack of reading comprehension aside, the majority of the community agreed it was great that Silksong paid tribute to the classic platformer, with some noting that those controls should be the industry standard for all metroidvanias because of how smooth and convenient they are.

Speaking of reading comprehension, over the weekend, the Chinese localization of Hollow Knight: Silksong came under fire from Chinese players, who mass-downvoted the game on Steam, bringing its rating down to just 77% positive. According to their reviews, the translation turned the game's otherwise simple text into something resembling Old English, forcing players to spend minutes just to read a couple of sentences.
