Far Cry is Getting an Anthology TV Adaptation, For Real This Time

It can't be worse than the 2008 movie, right?

Three months after accidentally revealing they've got a TV adaptation of the Far Cry game series in the works – only to quickly wipe all mention of it from the internet shortly after – Ubisoft has officially announced they've got a TV adaptation of the Far Cry game series in the works, being created by FX Productions for streaming on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in other countries.

As per the official announcement, the upcoming series has Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Rob Mac, Fargo's Noah Hawley, Emilia Serrano, Nick Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, John Campisi, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Gerard Guillemot – Yves' brother, for those wondering – serving as executive producers, with Rob Mac also set to appear in the show himself.

When it comes to the adaptation's plot and structure, Ubisoft has only revealed that it will be an anthology series, with each season featuring a new setting and cast of characters, similar to LDR, Black Mirror, or maybe even JoJo's Bizarre Adventure – a new story each season and whatnot. It remains unclear whether the series will adapt Far Cry games directly or tell entirely new stories set within the established universe.

"Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized," Mac comments. "Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support."

"What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it's an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme," adds Hawley. "To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I'm excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen."

Upon hearing the confirmation of the series, some recalled that there already is a Far Cry adaptation – a 2008 film directed by the man, the myth, the legend himself, Uwe Boll – leading to jokes about whether the upcoming anthology will be more bearable than Boll's creation, which, with its 12% Rotten Tomatoes rating, is probably not all that difficult to achieve.

To give credit where it's due, the iconic game series also has a little gem called The Far Cry Experience – a short live-action Far Cry 3 movie starring Christopher Mintz-Plasse as himself and Michael Mando as Vaas – and whatever you think of Far Cry or Ubisoft's current state, you have to admit, this one was an absolute cinema. With the next installment still shrouded in mystery, one can only hope that quality-wise, it ends up closer to Antoine Blossier's film than to Uwe Boll's.
