Firaxis' Director Shared that He Was Frustrated When He Missed Shots in XCOM
Firaxis Games' Jake Solomon spoke about the combat system of the upcoming Marvel's Midnight Suns comparing it to Firaxis' franchise XCOM.
Firaxis Games' creative director Jake Solomon recently spoke about the studio's upcoming tactical role-playing game Marvel's Midnight Suns discussing its combat system and comparing it with Firaxis' video game franchise XCOM.
According to Solomon, the combat system of Marvel's Midnight Suns is no better or worse than XCOM but the developers tried to make the battles different and have already felt the changes. In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, the creative director shared that tried to play XCOM a couple of years ago when Midnight Suns was already in active development as it was interesting for him to observe the changes after the team implemented some new mechanics for the superhero game.
It's worth noting that the XCOM mechanics work in such a way that even with a high chance of hitting the enemy players still may face misses during their attacks. These mechanics puzzled many players, and the creative director of Firaxis shared that he felt the same way.
"It was really interesting for me to return back and play XCOM a couple of years ago, and man, when I missed shots, I was unbelievably frustrated," Solomon said.
In Midnight Suns, according to the creative director, there will be no such misses, however, this should not affect the complexity of the tactical game.
"I did play [XCOM] a couple of years ago, and this was after we implemented the new mechanics for Midnight Suns, and it was really tough for me to get my head around the fact that in XCOM, you can actually do things wrong," Solomon shared. "And you really can’t do things wrong in Midnight Suns. You can do them better, but an attack card is an attack card."
Midnight Suns is a superhero game that is being developed by Firaxis Games in collaboration with Marvel Games. The title is said to feature a number of famous Marvel superheroes like Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and X-Men.
The game is set to release on October 7, 2022, on PC, Nintendo Switch, and two generations of Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
