First Collaboration of Hunt: Showdown 1896 Met with Criticizm

The appearance of the 90s horror film icon Ghostface in the vintage shooter concerned some players.

Following the heavily criticized big update in August, Crytek’s multiplayer shooting game Hunt: Showdown 1896 received a new DLC yesterday, Ghost Face Rampage. This DLC is a crossover — the game’s very first collaboration — with the Scream franchise and brings the iconic villain Ghostface to the game. Unfortunately, this time, it is not lucky enough to be free from negative voices.

The first appearance of the Ghostface was in the 1996 film Scream, a century later than the setting of the game, 1890s Colorado. So, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some frustrated players criticizing such cosmetics from a completely different era and universe would definitely not fit the games’ unique vintage charm and atmosphere.

The discussion and controversy have caused the developers to write a lengthy post on social media, explaining their considerations when introducing collaborations with other IPs and what they could mean for the game’s future. While making sure the collaborated IP would “blend seamlessly with our themes, setting, and storytelling,” the developers aim to enrich experiences for current players and, at the same time, “invite new players into our world with a few familiar faces.”

“We believe the latest Ghost Face Rampage DLC fits into the dark, supernatural atmosphere as an ageless, almost mythological figure that transcends eras. In the 1890s, a madman took up the mask, driven into a bloody frenzy by its foul whispers on a hunting trip in Louisiana—and the rest is history,” the developer concluded.
