Fluid Flux Plug-In For UE5 Might Feature Stylized Water Soon

Krystian Komisarek showcased his first experiment with stylized water in Unreal Engine 5.

Add-on Developer and creator of Fluid Flux, a 2D shallow water simulation system for Unreal Engine 5, Krystian Komisarek has recently shared a new demo teasing the possible addition of stylized water creation tools to his popular plug-in.

In the demo, the developer presented his first experiment with stylized water, explaining that the effect was achieved by manipulating the surface normal vector in relation to the camera vector, along with adding an emissive rim light for extra detail. Although Krystian didn't explicitly confirm that the setup was made for Fluid Flux, considering the developer shipped a major 3.0 update to the plug-in in late November and is likely working on version 4.0 as we speak, it's not unlikely that the next big release could focus on expanding FF's capabilities into the NPR space.

Speaking of Fluid Flux 3.0, the new version introduced an array of improvements in performance, stability, and memory management, along with many new features such as the glass system that lets you build underwater glass tunnels, fill glass tubes with flowing water, and light them appropriately with the volume mesh absorbing the light inside the tunnels, a new system that lets you simulate underwater scattering, a system for rendering decals on water, and more. And if you'd like to see Fluid Flux in action, we highly recommend checking out Shark Rain, an upcoming "shark-based shooter" where you can turn into the animal and back to get through obstacles and solve puzzles, which leverages the add-on for water simulations.
