Fluid Stylized 3D Creautre Animation Set Up in Maya

Nick Whitmire presented a new 3D animation made in collaboration with Brandon Young, Truong CG Artist, and Kiel Figgins.

Lead Cinematic Animator at Bungie Nick Whitmire, whom you might remember for showcasing a realistic crab animation back in August, has recently expanded his portfolio with Samurai War Beast, an incredibly-smooth stylized creature animation made in 3D.

Set up using Maya, a 3D character creation, VFX, rigging, animation, and simulation software by Autodesk, the sequence depicts a non-photorealistic ninja character riding a dinosaur-like creature, with Nick going above and beyond and stabilizing the body rider to make the sequence look physically correct.

According to the author, Samurai War Beast was set up in collaboration with Châu Võ Bá Trường, a.k.a. Truong CG Artist, the creator of the creature rig that was used for the project, Kiel Figgins, whose 3D Shao Nian rig was used to set up the rider, and Brandon Young, who was responsible for FX.

Following the reveal, Nick also shared a cool behind-the-scenes demo providing a look at the rig controls for the Samurai War Beast's run cycle:
