Only to announce their new game, which they also consider funding through Kickstarter.
Say what you will about Fntastic, the infamous developer behind the disastrous 2023 survival shooter The Day Before, it's impossible to deny that their level of self-confidence and determination is nothing short of inspirational. After delivering what might be one of the worst video games in industry history, available for just four days – a record even Concord couldn't beat – the team had the audacity not only to come back with one more game but to ask the community to fund it on Kickstarter, stating they would need $15,000 for their new project.
A month later, after Fntastic's daring attempt to raise fifteen grand predictably failed, the team announced the cancellation of both the game and its funding campaign, stating that Escape Factory, the game in question, failed to generate enough interest. One could only wonder why that happened.
However – and here's the best part – Fntastic wouldn't be Fntastic without breaking a promise or two along the way. Despite stating in their FAQ – which they seemingly forgot to delete like they usually do with their tweets – that they wouldn't be able to continue if they didn't meet their funding goal, the cancellation announcement was paired with the reveal of yet another game, which, believe it or not, they're also considering funding through Kickstarter.
The new title revealed by the studio, dubbed ITEMS, is described as an action-horror prop hunt game, something that, according to Fntastic, is "exactly what many of you have been waiting for." According to the official statement shared by the developer, once they have a fully playable demo ready, they will explore various funding methods, including Kickstarter. However, the main way to support development will be through the team's mobile games, which they plan to release in parallel.
Here's the full statement for your reading pleasure, you can also check it out on Twitter and read the juicy comments there, however, knowing Fntastic, it's not impossible that by the time this article is published, the tweet will have already been deleted:
Alongside the announcement, Fntastic also shared a look at a couple of ITEMS' early in-game character models:
I have a confession to make – at this point, I can't even bring myself to dislike the developer. As strange and scammy as many perceive their games and business approach to be, they consistently manage to entertain the community just by being around. Hopefully, they won't follow through on their promise to fade into obscurity but instead stick around, continuing to bring laughter to many simply by existing.
