Fort Solis: a Narrative-Driven Sci-Fi Thriller Set on Mars

Starring Troy Baker, Roger Clark, and Julia Brown.

James Tinsdale, Head of Fallen Leaf, has explained what to expect from Fort Solis – a third-person sci-fi thriller introduced at Summer Game Fest. Starring Troy Baker, Roger Clark, and Julia Brown, the game is set on Mars, at an isolated mining post. Receiving an alarm alert, engineer Jack Leary arrives at the abandoned station and has to solve the mystery of the crew's disappearance.

"We wanted to create something in the vein of Duncan Jones' Moon, and by that, I mean the psychological aspect where characters' motivations or their perception of reality itself is challenged, so we've combined that with perhaps the isolated industrial style of Dead Space," Tinsdale told IGN.

The studio eventually decided to use the third-person perspective for the game to be played in one continuous shot, without edits, to deepen the immersion. This is especially thrilling when you're walking around the station, which is fully open for you to explore.

You'll have to solve environment puzzles and gain access to buildings through certain actions or progressive states. The game offers nine locations with different levels, all connected with tunnels underground. And if they're too spooky for you, try the surface, although it also has its own challenges, like a dust storm and limited field of vision.

The protagonist Jack Leary is not a fighter, so he has a multi-tool instead of a gun. "We want you to feel like you're an engineer, not a super soldier," said Tinsdale. The device has "all kinds of alerts" to help you navigate and interact with objects.

Fort Solis's interactive cinematics are called key sequences, they offer playable scenes where your choices (and even a lack of them) matter. The outcome can be different depending on how well you participate or if you take action at all.

The story has several endings, all designed to be impactful.

"We wanted our really big moments to have really decisive outcomes and for those outcomes to change the characters. Every big moment should change the character in some way, have some effect on them."
