Fortnite Joins Olympic Esports Series

The Olympic Esports Week is set to begin on June 22.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that it has included Epic Games' Fortnite in the lineup for the Olympic Esports Finals.

Twelve players from the Fortnite Champion Series will be competing in a sharpshooting competition endorsed by the International Shooting Sport Federation. The contest will take place on a specially designed Fortnite Creative Island, offering viewers a chance to see some of the most skilled virtual sports shooters from around the world.

Additionally, the IOC shared that it has opened ticket sales for the Olympic Esports Week, featuring the first in-person finals of the 2023 competition series in Singapore from June 22 to June 25. Ticket prices start at 10 SGD per day or 20 SGD for the three-day competition starting June 23.

The Fortnite sport shooting matches will be held on June 24 and can be viewed on Olympics.com and the Olympics' social media channels.

The Olympic Esports Series comprises nine games that mirror real-world sports regulated by international federations. The selection includes Just Dance, Gran Turismo racing, Zwift cycling, and even web chess. The series is a continuation of the Olympic Virtual Series from 2021, which featured five digital sports. The IOC views this initiative as a step toward promoting esports and engaging with the gaming community on a broader scale.

The inclusion of a Fortnite island aligns with the IOC's esports objectives, as it offers "peaceful competition" which mirrors real-world sport. While digital Olympics featuring games like Counter-Strike 2 or League of Legends are not currently in the works, Fortnite's popularity in the Esports Series is expected to draw viewers who may not typically be interested in conventional esports events.
