Game Engine Unigine Gets DX12 & Vulkan Support, PSDGI, Performance Updates

The UNIGINE team introduced a new update adding DirectX 12 and Vulkan support, Panorama Space Dynamic Global Illumination, and more.

The team behind the UNIGINE game engine introduced the next big update introducing several new improvements. First, the engine now provides DirectX 12 and Vulkan support which is production-ready and available for everyone (both in the Editor and runtime). The team says the update results in increased CPU performance.

The second major thing in the release is the introduction of a new Raymarching mode for the Environment Probe light source. The updates is described as "a far more advanced high-quality dynamic GI technique than any other solution used in UNIGINE before".

The new denoiser implementation in the update is said to process noise in reflections better, plus it preserves illumination details. "So, now we do not apply denoiser for each post-effect, instead we do it once for the whole resulting indirect specular and indirect diffuse buffers. This approach enables us to effectively remove noise for any GI technique such as SSRTGI, SSR, or even ray tracing," wrote the UNIGINE team.

As for performance optimizations, here's the list of improvements:

  • Switch to DirectX 12 can give up to 30% performance boost on the CPU side
  • Multiple optimizations all over the engine
  • Asynchronous GPU-to-CPU data transfer
  • Improved asynchronous mesh streaming
  • Better Landscape Terrain streaming
Among other things, the latest build has Weather Radar (aka WSR) which is used to monitor weather ahead of the aircraft (clouds and precipitation). The ability helps to set up a professional flight simulator enabling pilots to train strategic and tactical planning of a safe flight trajectory.
