GameStop Reportedly Fires Employee Following Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Switch Leak

Following a post about Nintendo's special edition console, an employee was investigated and subsequently terminated.

A GameStop employee who created a buzz around the possibility of a special Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom edition of the Nintendo Switch Pro claims that he has been fired from his job due to pressure from Nintendo.

An employee of GameStop known as "Mike", shared a photo of the company's inventory database on Reddit speculating that the system would be unveiled before Nintendo's new gameplay trailer for Tears of the Kingdom.

As reported by Kotaku, after the Reddit post, Mike's identity was quickly revealed through his account name and other publicly identifiable details. As a result, he met with his manager and was suspended within a week. He was eventually fired within two weeks.

According to Mike, he made the post to inform fans about the pre-order availability, especially if the stock was limited, and he was not aware of any official employee policy he might have violated.

Nintendo reportedly did not approve of Mike's actions and wanted him fired for the post. Mike claims that his boss informed him "off the record" about Nintendo's request.

As a result of losing his job, Mike has expressed his disappointment that he will no longer be able to afford his pre-order for the Zelda Switch. "Sadly, I won't be able to afford it anymore due to lack of a job," he said.

Nintendo has recently begun to actively deal with leaks of Tears of the Kingdom. Earlier, it became known that the company requested that the court issue a subpoena to compel Discord to disclose the identity of the user responsible for publicly sharing an artbook for the upcoming game.
