Over the weekend, Game Designer and the creator of the Gears of War series, Cliff Bleszinski, issued a statement on Twitter, commenting on his current relationship with the franchise and its rightsholder, Microsoft.
In the statement, Bleszinski revealed that his consulting offers to Microsoft and The Coalition, the series' present-day developer, were met with "crickets", even though it would be a great opportunity for both parties to collaborate "just from a PR standpoint alone". Acknowledging that Gears are "an enormous part of [his] legacy", the developer shared that he has moved on to pursue other endeavors, including involvement in restaurants, stand-up comedy, writing comic books, and Broadway.
"Look, we've been over this a million times re: Gears. I'm down to consult. Give my two cents. Crickets," Bleszinski wrote in the statement. "I understand that Gears will always be an ENORMOUS part of my legacy. I appreciate and respect that. That said, MS/Coalition haven't hit me up. OK. It is what it is. If they were smart, they'd enlist me for my input because, just from a PR standpoint alone it would be gold. But nothing. Ah well. It is what it is. So be it."
The developer also touched upon the closure of Boss Key Productions, maintaining an optimistic attitude and referring to the studio's shutdown as a simple "shit happens" situation. Finishing the statement, Bleszinski encouraged fans to check out his 2023 comic book, Scrapper, created in partnership with Alex De Campi and Sandy Jarrell and published by Image Comics.
"As much as I appreciate your support and those who know me from my Gears work (I did do a lot more than that game series, for the record), it's time to move on," he continued. "I'm on a new journey. I have been for some time now."
"Please check out my comic Scrapper. It comes from my heart – just like Gears did. If you're a creative, that's the best way to create, is to make content that's personal."
