All user content will be deleted in a few weeks.
Gyfcat's parent company, Snap, shared its intention to shut down the GIF database and remove all user content. An announcement at the top of the website states, "The Gfycat service is being discontinued."
"Please save or delete your Gfycat content by visiting the website and logging in to your account. After September 1, 2023, all Gfycat content and data will be deleted," the statement says.
Many users who had been attempting to open Gfycat website over the previous few months weren't surprised to hear of its impending closure. Online media claimed in May that Snap overlooked the site's SSL certificates expiring, preventing most users from accessing it. On May 22, the certificates were renewed, with a Snap spokesperson describing it as a "temporary issue", though problems with uploading to the site remained.
The reason for the closure is not exactly known. Snap itself has not yet commented on the decision. Notably, the company only acquired Gfycat last year. Users storing images on a hosting should take care of their content and move files to other platforms.
