Ghost of a Tale Follow-up Will Be Powered by Unreal Engine 5
Ghost of a Tale developer revealed that Ghost of a Tale's follow-up game will use Unreal Engine 5 instead of Unity.
DreamWorks and Universal Pictures veteran Lionel "Seith" Gallat, who is known as the developer of 2018's indie action RPG Ghost of a Tale, recently took to Twitter to reveal that Ghost of a Tale's follow-up game will use Unreal Engine 5 instead of Unity.
Ghost of a Tale was first launched for PC in 2018, and later the game was also released for PS4 and Xbox One (2020) as well as Nintendo Switch (2020). It was well-recieved by players, and developers started creating the follow-up game. Although the game has never been officially announced, the developers never hid the fact of its existence, and recently they shared that the development progress on the Ghost of Tale's follow-up had slowed down, as they left the Unity engine in favor of UE5.
In the wake of recent news about Unity regarding both its merger with ironSource and the statements of the company's head, Lionel Gallat decided to "as well go public" about the decision regarding switching the engine. The developer, however, noted that the decision was made "several months ago" and not now.
"Several months ago we made the tough decision to ditch Unity and move on to UE5 for our follow-up game to Ghost of a Tale," Gallat wrote. "It set us back significantly in terms of schedule (lots of work to recreate) but we know it was the right decision."
When asked what main challenges the team faced while using the Unity engine, Gallat shared that the lack of detailed documentation, "no playing fast and loose with files anymore", and "steep learning curve in terms of good practices" caused problems.
"We tried to push Unity quite far, but more recently we started spending more time hacking/bypassing the engine rather than doing game dev work. So something had to change," he wrote.
It's currently unknown when the developers will officially announce the follow-up game to Ghost of a Tale.
