Enjoy non-destructive layer effects and text styling, enhanced color management, improved usability, and better compatibility with Photoshop.
At long last, the first release of GIMP 3.0 is here. Known for being one of the most popular free image editors, GIMP has long offered powerful features like layers, filters, and masking, similar to Photoshop. This release is the result of years of work from the GIMP community: GIMP 2.10 came out in 2018, and the first version of GIMP 3.0 was released in 2020.
In GIMP 3.0, you can now easily tweak filters you've applied hours ago with the new non-destructive editing feature for commonly-used filters. See your changes in real-time with an on-canvas preview.

Set your paint tool to automatically expand layers as needed and style your text, add outlines, shadows, bevels, and more, all while keeping the ability to edit the text, change the font and size, or adjust the style settings.
Organizing layers has become simpler, with the ability to select multiple items at once and move or transform them all together. Color management has been further improved as part of GIMP's ongoing effort to become an advanced image editor for all uses.

The graphical toolkit (GTK3) has been updated for a more modern desktop experience. You can now exchange files with more applications, including BC7 DDS files, better PSD export, and support for many new formats.
