Google Tests Hand Gesture Verification For reCAPTCHA

Wave at your camera to prove you're human.

Google

With AI-powered bots growing more sophisticated, reCAPTCHA has moved far beyond basic image challenges like identifying traffic lights. Google is now testing a new way to confirm users are human, asking them to make hand gestures in front of their camera.

According to the documentation, the system analyzes one or more videos of a user's hand as they perform various actions. The video is processed to extract hand landmark data, which includes 21 hand-knuckle coordinates. According to Google, "the videos are never associated with a user's identity and are deleted after the verification process." Audio is also reportedly never recorded.

"Hand gesture challenges require permission to access a user's camera. After the user consents to perform hand gestures, Google receives camera permissions, and users can manage these permissions in their browser settings at any time. Google processes hand gesture videos for the sole purpose of security verification and does not transfer any related data or permissions to third parties."

For users who can't complete hand gesture verification due to accessibility needs, there are alternative visual and audio challenges available.

While the feature is optional, it has unsurprisingly sparked privacy concerns among those who are skeptical of Google's handling of personal data. It also feels like part of a broader trend toward more biometric-style verification and age-checking tools online. Besides, it's not really clear how well this would hold up against virtual cameras and AI-generated animations that can mimic hand gestures.
