Recording Academy CEO stated that AI technology "will play a part in amplifying creativity".
A month ago, the Recording Academy made a significant update to the rules for the 2024 Grammy Awards, allowing music created with the assistance of artificial intelligence-powered tools to be eligible for consideration.
This decision has been quite controversial, considering many artists', including those in the music industry, concerns regarding generative AIs. Under the new policy, songs that have been aided by AI can now participate in the Grammys, but compositions entirely or primarily generated by AI will not qualify for nomination.
Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Recording Academy, recently defended this decision by stating his belief that technology "has and always will play a part in amplifying – not replacing – but amplifying creativity".
In an interview with Decrypt, Mason emphasized that the Recording Academy is actively exploring ways to detect the use of AI tools in music submissions. However, he acknowledged that the Academy still relies on artists' honesty when disclosing their utilization of AI techniques in their creative process.
"We've been looking into it, and we're going to be both using... I guess we'll call it the 'honor system', for people to be forthright about what AI is doing, what AI is not doing," the CEO told Decrypt. "We'll also use any other means available to us at the time of nomination or awards."
Furthermore, Mason noted that while he believes in artificial intelligence technology, there are still essential prerequisites that need to be fulfilled for AI to become actively involved in the music business moving forward.
"There needs to be proper remuneration, proper attribution, and proper approvals," he noted. "These things all need to take place for AI to be involved in our business or our ecosystem going forward."
"We are in the business of celebrating human excellence and human creativity," Mason added. "We're going to continue to watch this, and we're going to see from this year to next year what changes – and we will pivot and adjust if we feel the need to do so."
