Gran Turismo Series Has Sold Over 90 Million Copies

In celebration of the Gran Turismo series’ 25th anniversary, developer Polyphony Digital has released a new trailer and a special message from the studio's president Kazunori Yamauchi.

Polyphony Digital's racing simulation game series Gran Turismo is celebrating its 25th anniversary. On this occasion, the developer released an anniversary trailer and published a blog post thanking the fans for their support over all these years.

In his special message published on the PlayStation blog, Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that the total sales of the racing sim series reached over 90 million copies.

"In the last 25 years, the cumulative sales total of the series have reached over 90 million copies as of November 16, 2022. And this result is something that could not be accomplished by ourselves alone.

Behind that 90 million figure, there are all the people of the media who conveyed the allure of Gran Turismo to their readers. There are the people of PlayStation who sold GT for us around the world with passion, and there is the incredible amount of support from the retailers who interfaced with our users. My heartfelt thanks goes out to all of them for their support.

And above all else, I can’t ever thank enough the GT users and people of the GT community who have played our new titles, which at times could be said to have been very experimental."

In addition, Yamaguchi shared a touching story of how Gran Turismo came to life and expressed his pride that Polyphony Digital continued for 25 years with the same title and the same team. He also added that the studio has significantly expanded during these years – and a small team of just a few developers who started to work on the first Grand Turismo grew to over 200 employees.
