The AI knows how to make split-second decisions on the track and respects other players.
Sony AI, in collaboration with Polyphony Digital and Sony Interactive Entertainment, has unveiled GT Sophy, a new AI that can outrace the world's best drivers in the 2017 game Gran Turismo Sport. GT Sophy is an autonomous AI agent trained to utilize a deep reinforcement learning platform. According to the developers, the goal was to deliver new AI-powered gaming experiences to the players. Sony AI and PDI already considering the integration of GT Sophy into future releases of the Gran Turismo series.
According to the making-of video, released by Sony AI, GT Sophy was trained to master car control and racing tactics needed to come on top. The AI can make split-second decisions in response to ever-evolving racing situations. Sophy was also taught the racing etiquette, meaning it respects other players and doesn't try to use maneuvers that can lead to collisions, including blocking.
“Gran Turismo Sophy is a significant development in AI whose purpose is not simply to be better than human players, but to offer players a stimulating opponent that can accelerate and elevate the players’ techniques and creativity to the next level,” said Hiroaki Kitano, CEO of Sony AI. “In addition to making contributions to the gaming community, we believe this breakthrough presents new opportunities in areas such as autonomous racing, autonomous driving, high-speed robotics, and control.”
