"Niko is still the best protagonist in any GTA game."
Rockstar
GTA fans' mood has been riding a roller coaster recently. Their high anticipation was poured cold water on with the game delay announcement, which got flamed again with the sudden drop of the second trailer. Then came an exciting rumor that a remaster of GTA IV might be released later this year.
In case you missed it, a few days ago, Tez2, a data miner who specializes in Rockstar titles, cheered up the community with the words that the GTA IV port, which a Rockstar staff member hinted at, could be dropped later this year after being in development for a year. This is yet another reason, along with others, why the LCPP mod was removed.
Whether a remaster or a port, it is seen as necessary by the fans, both because it was a beloved game and because it alleviated the eagerness as they wait for the next title, which would only be released after another year of waiting, if not delayed again.
Not only are the fans welcoming it, but Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar technical director who worked on several GTA titles and predicted last October that Rockstar would only decide whether the new GTA would launch in 2025 by around May, also believes that the 2008 game should be remastered. "It's a great game, and there have been a number of successful remasters recently," he said on social media.
Replying to a fan asking his personal feelings towards it, as it was one of the GTA games he worked on while at Rockstar, Obbe said, "I would like to see it updated. Niko is still the best protagonist in any gta game I think."
If we look at reports from a few years ago, there were traces of a potential GTA IV remaster. As early as 2022, Tez2 cited someone who was familiar with Rockstar's plans and said that Rockstar considered developing remasters of GTA IV and the original Red Dead Redemption a few years ago. However, the developer eventually decided to shelve the projects. If the information from the data miner is true, GTA IV remaster/port could have been picked up again later.
