GTA Online Devs Couldn't Imagine the Game Would "Still Be Going 10 Years On"

"The success of GTA Online is nothing we ever expected," the game's design director says.

GTA Online is getting 10 years old this year. In anticipation of the anniversary, the game's designers discussed the beginning of this journey and their expectations for the game and spoke about the community's role in shaping the game.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, design director Scott Butchard shared that when he started to work on the online version of GTA, he couldn't even imagine that the game would be such a success that it would continue for a decade. According to him, it has been "an epic learning experience" for the team as they have been gradually shaping up the game – from "finding their feet" first to bringing some interesting updates that were requested by the community.

"When we started out, I don’t think we could have ever dreamed we’d still be going 10 years on. The success of GTA Online is nothing we ever expected," he says.

Butchard noted that when the team just started working on GTA Online, it was initially focused on releasing smaller updates, while also preparing to introduce the first Heist in the game. He mentioned that the feedback from the game's community was instrumental in shaping the development of the game and that the design team still relies heavily on feedback from the game's community to make decisions about introducing new features.

Speaking of the evolution of GTA Online, the design director shared that initially, the team was focusing on a multiplayer experience as they felt they "needed to get players in and have fun playing together in a shared space" but now, according to Butchard, the devs also work on providing more ways for players to enjoy the game on an individual level as they realized that the core experience could be enhanced by enabling players to enjoy the game individually, which could be further modified and refined by playing with others.

"We started to really hit our stride when we began designing Heists to be playable with just one or two players, then building on the original experience with social spaces like the Nightclubs, or the Casino – spaces that could act as connective tissue for our players jumping from experience to experience, either with a Crew or solo," he explained.

GTA Online's lead designer Chris Bell added that the massiveness and long-term nature of working on GTA Online can create a surreal experience but it feels really rewarding when the project is well-received by the vast community. According to him, the workdays behind the scenes are always different, and each update provides his team with an opportunity to hear players' requests for future updates.

He mentioned that one of the team's biggest challenges is to keep the game interesting and engaging for both new and experienced players, especially considering the vast range of experiences already available in GTA Online.

The lead designer explained that the decision-making process for creating new updates for GTA Online involves ensuring that new updates complement other areas of the game while also offering something new for players to engage with. He provided an example from The Criminal Enterprises update and how it expanded on existing businesses in the game while also providing new story missions for players who prefer that aspect of the game.

Butchard added that growing up with the GTA Online community has led to a satisfactory balance between community feedback and the team's design decisions. According to him, many changes in the game begin as community suggestions and are then shaped by the team's own vision for GTA Online and its future.
