A very handy tip from 3D Artist iltaen, guaranteed to be used for nothing weird.

This alternative to blendshapes, showcased by Roman "iltaen" Gibadullin, is of course likely to be used for perfectly normal purposes. That said, using the Shrinkwrap constraint on bones is an excellent approach for creating portal-like surfaces.
