Here's How You Make 3D Characters' Eyes Look Prettier From the Sides
Two meshes are better than one.
3D Artist and VTuber Modeler MAO has recently shared a brief yet insightful tutorial showcasing a simple trick that will help you make the eyes of your 3D characters look much prettier when observed from the sides.
The trick in question involves using two additional meshes with inverted Normals on them, one for the whites of the eyes and one for the iris itself. If the original mesh already has blendshapes on it, MAO recommended duplicating the iris from the existing iris and making it convex so that it copies the blendshapes, as well as creating the convex eye white mesh by copying the loop from the edge of the eye whites. While the technique is designed primarily for VTuber models, it can also be used for regular anime-like stylized character models made in Blender.
